Fifteen Years in Seattle. Announcement: AHELP Support is Now in California, too!
By Michelle Nichols, MS, HonCAHP, CGRS | Animal Hospice Coach, Educator, Mentor, and Certified Grief Recovery Specialist, AHELP Founder
Partners to the Bridge coaching has always been available to pet families across North America. What's new is where we're growing our knowledge — and our people.
There's something I want you to know, because I think context matters here: Partners to the Bridge, Animal Hospice Coaching, has never been limited by geography. If you are a pet family navigating serious illness, end-of-life decisions, or the grief that comes with loving an animal deeply, we have been here for you — wherever you are in North America – over videoconferencing and phone. What's changing isn't access. It's the depth of knowledge and presence we can bring to a new part of the country.
For fifteen years, the Greater Seattle Area, Washington has been our home base — the community where we built our roots, our relationships, and our on-the-ground understanding of veterinary care, local resources, and the support systems that pet families actually need. That foundation is not going anywhere.
But life has a way of expanding your world in the most meaningful directions. I've recently begun spending part of my time in California, and in just a few months, something has become wonderfully clear: animal lovers are absolutely everywhere here. There are dogs on every corner, and my own dog Teddy has been in his element — nose to the ground, picking up a scent that smells curiously like his dear old friend Mickey. It turns out those trails usually lead to a pet parent with a cat or two at home, and more often than not, a lovely conversation follows. That is how community works, and it is exactly what we have found here.
With talented new team members joining us in California as well, I find myself immersed in a new ecosystem — new providers, new communities, new resources, and a growing firsthand understanding of what California pet families are navigating every day. I am learning from the inside and bringing that knowledge back to all of you.
A Resource Built for California Pet Families
For a start, we've compiled those findings into a comprehensive California Veterinary Financial Assistance Guide (webpage), organized by type of support, with direct links and clear descriptions of what each organization covers and how to apply.
And if you're in California, Washington State, or anywhere across North America, our Financial Help for Veterinary Bills page features national, CA, and WA-specific resources.

To Our California Pet Families — We Already Know Some of You
Here's something that made us smile when we looked at the numbers: approximately 15% of our AHELP online community members are already based in California. That means this isn't really an introduction — it's more of a long-overdue hello to neighbors we've been talking with all along.
If you are one of those valued California members, please reach out and introduce yourself. We would genuinely love to know who you are, where you are, and how we can serve your community better as we deepen our presence there. You have been part of building something meaningful, and we don't want that to go unsaid.
And to everyone reading this, wherever you are — if you know a California pet parent or a veterinarian who could benefit from AHELP as a resource, please forward this blog or an AHELPer Newsletter to them. AHELP is a community built on the belief that no pet family should have to navigate the hardest moments alone, and the more people who know it exists, the more families we can reach together.
The Heart of It
Whether you're in the Bay Area, San Diego, Los Angeles, or anywhere in between, you have always been welcome here. What's new is that we are putting in the time to know your backyard a little better. Our new team members will know the providers in your corner, as well as the organizations and resources specific to your region. Soon, you'll be meeting the team members who live and work in your community alongside you.
The heart of what we do — walking alongside pet families through the hardest parts of loving an animal — is the same everywhere we go, and it doesn't change with a zip code. We are simply getting better at knowing where you live, what's available to you, and how to support you within the landscape of your own community.
